Preventing dehydration with refreshing summer drinks

It’s hot out there and we NEED to drink more water.

Ok, so plain water is not all that exciting, I’m with you – and I am a huge water drinker!  And over-drinking can be an issue when you don’t have access to a loo, especially on road trips – not to mention unladylike and uncomfortable to wiggle in my seat or sit on my heel for who knows how many miles. I’ll take the train, thank you. My point is, just drink!  BUT Dehydration has odd effects on our bodies…

Such as fatigue, circles under our eyes, dry skin, headaches, crankiness, a sluggish system, and most of all—dehydration will disguise itself as HUNGER.

Once while in the mountains in India, I got very dehydrated and an Indian healer I was with handed me a bag of chips and a coke. I looked at her crossed eyed as she ordered me to eat. So I did, and I felt better quickly. Why?

And the sport drink companies know this well. I’m happy to say that there are many other options of refreshing summer drinks that you can make at home to keep you hydrated and happy. Not only that, but when you are feeling fun and frisky, and the moment is right , adding a bit of  “spirit” to the mix is always an option.

Here are three of my favorite rehydration recipes—remember, spiking them is optional :

1. Coconut water

Juice one lemon
Add a large pinch of sea salt
Coconut water (If you can’t crack a fresh coconut, Harmless Harvest Coconut Water is the next best thing.)

You can make a whole pitcher of this and keep in the fridge and even blend with ice.

2. Lemonade (my style)

One lemon, one lime – juiced
One liter of water
Handful of mint
2 Tbsp. honey
Large pinch of sea salt.
Blend on high
Pour over ice(?)

3. Ginger lime water-from Veggies for Carnivores

2 limes, juiced – 1 lemon, juiced
1–2 Tbsp. maple syrup or coconut sugar
1″ piece of fresh ginger, juiced or grated (or 1/2 Tbsp. ginger powder)
Pinch of salt (I will sometimes add baking soda instead . . . truly a medicinal effect!)
1.5 liters of water
Handful of ice
Blend on high
