After an intense and sweaty yoga class I walked to what used to be “Healthy Pleasures” on Grand and Mercer for a juice and breakfast. Mornings were mostly the same from day to day. I would walk to the carob-smelling shop, order my juice, explore the short aisles of colorful hippy products and begin my self-soothing ritual of label reading.
Mind you this was 2003 and label reading was not “en vogue, au courant.” Suddenly I felt a strong, piercing presence on my back, as if someone was watching me. Granted this was Manhattan but it seemed early for stalkers. I whipped my head around, tightly gripping the two wrapped rice flour muffins in my hands and it was none other than Willem Dafoe, a fellow Ashtangie, and his yoga companion. They were gawking at me like I was painted green or had three heads. Perhaps I WAS spending a bit too much time on the labels but the reality is, we need to know what is in our food and how to decode those mysterious lists on the backs of packages. Right?
My dear friend Vani Hari, aka The Food Babe is all about teaching just that. She is a food activist who has taken on some of the biggest corporations in America, like Kraft, Subway, Starbucks, Chic-Fil-A and many more, head on. She does it with a twinkle in her eye and a loving smile on her face. But don’t let that beautiful smile fool you. She is one tornado to be reckoned with. She and her #FoodBabeArmy have helped sway Subway to ban a toxic ingredient in their bread – a change they’ve in turn used in their marketing campaigns.
Vani’s inspiration comes from her own health challenges. She was put on multiple prescription drugs very early, had her appendix out and wanted answers. As an high-achieving, trained debater, this woman knows how to research and will stop and nothing to get answers. I have honestly never seen anything like it in my life.
Vani’s new best selling book, The Food Babe Way, teaches you step by step how to eat real food, decode and decipher a label, demystify hidden ingredients in even the most innocent looking foods, begin to create healthy rituals of your own and make healthy travel a breeze. You will lose weight, your skin will begin to glow and you will start to crave greens and vegetables. This is one of the best lifestyle books I have ever read. It’s clear, easy to follow, backed by personal stories and jaw-dropping data about the food industry. It is really a must have for anyone who cares about their health.
I cannot recommend this book more.
Vani spells out a lifestyle in 21 simple steps.
Over 21 days you WILL rid your body of toxins and lose weight without counting calories or feeling deprived of anything.
In The Food Babe Way, you will learn how to:
• Avoid the top 15 ingredients that wreak havoc on your weight, beauty and health.
• Spot the manipulative marketing and manufacturing techniques the food industry uses to get you to eat processed foods, or to hide sneaky ingredients.
• Replace the foods that make you poofy, look older and sap your energy with healthful substitutes that taste amazing.
Am I still that crazy chick in the health food store reading labels? Yes! But now I have lots of friends who do it too so I don’t look so crazy.
